Powder Blue Tang (Acanthurus leucosternon)

The Powder Blue Tang is one of the most striking surgeonfish in the hobby, instantly recognizable by its brilliant powder-blue body, jet-black mask, and vibrant yellow dorsal fin. Active, elegant, and always on the move, this fish adds both beauty and energy to any large reef or fish-only aquarium.

Native to the reefs of the Indian Ocean, the Powder Blue Tang is an active grazer, helping to control algae while showing off its graceful swimming patterns. While peaceful toward most tankmates, it may be territorial with other tangs, especially those of similar shape or color.

  • Scientific Name: Acanthurus leucosternon

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive (can be territorial with other tangs)

  • Reef Safe: Yes

  • Diet: Herbivore — thrives on marine algae, nori sheets, and quality herbivore pellets

  • Care Level: Moderate to Difficult (requires stable, mature tank)

  • Max Size: ~9 inches

  • Tank Size: 125+ gallons recommended for ample swimming space

Note: Powder Blue Tangs are prone to stress-related diseases like ich, so a proper acclimation process and pristine water quality are key to long-term success. Best kept in a well-established aquarium with plenty of open space and rockwork for grazing.
